Fun with chores : Laundry

I am so lazy prioritise my chores so if you come to our house at the right time, you will see our little hill made of clothes, sometimes as high as 1 metre. :p

I have 2 strategies when it comes to doing laundry :
1. Dedicate a day to do endless cycles of laundry (good for a busy week)
2. Do a cycle a day (our usual routine)

The kids will help when it comes to laundry. They really fancy the washing machine.

Here is what I will do to encourage the kids to help :
1. Announce that I’m going to wash the laundry. Ask, “Anyone wants to help?”

2. Give specific tasks.
For lil n (3 years) :
– roam around the rooms and see whether anything need a wash and is left behind.
– Fold clothes
– missy’s tasks

Missy (16 months) :
– transfer dirty laundry into washing machine. Close the door when done.
– transfer washed laundry to the drier.
– take laundry out from drier.

watch lil n fold his clothes.

Sorting Activity

I prepared this sorting activity for Missy & Lil N. Throw a stone kill two birds. ;p

Task for Lil N (3 year) :
– Sorting the links according to colors
– Counting numbers of links in each color section (also doing a simple addition activity)
– Putting some links in his own and telling me the reason why he sorts them that way.

Tasks for Missy (15m):
– Sorting according to colors (or, you know, just messing things up is fine too! :D)

Materials needed :
-I used recycled materials (that I got from conducting spree) as containers.

-A colorful set of baby links bought from Tom & Stefanie. I could not remember the exact brand, but there are so many choices available.

I really recommend this toy as it is versatile and has many purposes. You can create links to attach bottles, toys, or hankies to your stroller or bags, play sorting games, or use it as counters. Your baby can have fun chewing it, throwing it, accessorizing him/herself with colorful little bracelets (alert, it might not fit for big hands :D)…. well, the possibility is endless.

You can use any other things that you can find at your home for sorting, e.g. Handkerchief, socks, spoons n forks, buttons, ribbons – seriously, anything!

You don’t always need elaborate and expensive toys to teach and play with your kids. It can be done at low cost, you only need to invest your time. ๐Ÿ™‚

Getting Ready for Christmas

It’s almost the time of the year.

I always love Christmas time. Don’t you feel people are nicer during the month of December? ย I do feel I am much a better person in December, I guess it’s just the spirit of Christmas.ย ๐Ÿ˜‰

Last year, when Lil N (then 27 m) was talking and understand a whole lot of things, I decided it was time to introduce Christmas story to him. I prefer to let him hear it from me than from anyone else. ๐Ÿ™‚ย We had daily devotion about Christmas and we used a Nativity play set. If you do not have one, a mummy friend shared how to make one using the resources fromย here.

For Christmas this year, I will use the same resources as last year. ๐Ÿ™‚

Some of our considerations in choosing Christmas books/resources:

– telling the story about original Christmas story

There is no Santa no presents, and no glorious celebration in the stable when Jesus was born.

We had a very nice set of books about Santa given by a friend, but I have decided to give it away, since Lil N will have his dose of those in the celebrations we’ll have.

– teaching concept of giving instead of receiving

Some families have traditions of exchanging gifts, I’m not against that idea. However for our family, we are not there yet and we will focus more on the concept of giving instead of receiving. I will try to make little projects on giving during this season too.ย Last year we have a small project in which we packed little goodie bags to be given to the less fortunate children. When Lil N received Christmas presents (not from us though ;p), we told him that the person who get his gifts will feel happy and blessed just like he was. ๐Ÿ™‚

Why we use a Nativity Play Set

– Simply, because it’s a great visual. Children can play with it while remembering Christmas story.

– This particular Fisher Price set that we have, will last for a very long time, so I think it is worth the investment ๐Ÿ™‚
